  • Limiting your caffeine intake
  • Starting and sticking to healthy sleep habits and routine

How do you get prescribed sleeping pills?

Before you can get prescription sleeping pills online or in person from your doctor, you’ll need to be evaluated and diagnosed with a sleep disorder. Sleeping pills may not be right for everyone and your provider may be able to help treat your insomnia without them. Contact your care provider or a mental health professional to discuss your insomnia symptoms and get a formal evaluation. Together, you’ll review treatment plan options that may include sleep medication.

What are the most commonly prescribed sleeping pills?

The most commonly prescribed sleeping pills are in the class of drugs known as sedative-hypnotics. These drugs help people with insomnia fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The most common sleeping pills are Lunesta and Ambien. Triazolam, estazolam, and temazepam may be used in more severe cases.

Disclaimer: Talkspace does not prescribe certain medications in the sedative class.

What is the first drug of choice for insomnia?

The first line medication to treat insomnia is often Ambien or Lunesta. These are generally prescribed first because they have a lower risk of dependence or withdrawal than some other insomnia drugs.

Is trazodone a strong sleeping pill?

Trazodone isn’t necessarily a “strong” sleeping pill. It’s actually an antidepressant in the class of drugs known as serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs). However, a low dose of Trazodone is sometimes used off-label to treat insomnia. It’s important to note that Trazodone is only effective for sleep onset — that is, falling asleep — and generally isn’t used for sleep maintenance or a long-term treatment option.
